What the Roma Pass Includes
The Roma Pass bundles three things: unlimited public transport (metro, bus, tram) for the pass period, free entry to your first one or two sites, and discounted entry plus skip-the-ticket-line perks at many more. The 72-hour version covers your first two sites free; the 48-hour version covers the first one. Most visitors "spend" a free slot on the Colosseum because it is one of the pricier entries.
The Colosseum Reservation Catch
Here's the part that trips people up: even with the Roma Pass, the Colosseum requires a timed-entry reservation booked ahead, along with a small booking fee (about €2). The pass pays the ticket cost, not the reservation step. In busy months those slots sell out days in advance, so a pass in your pocket does not mean same-day access. Reserve the moment you have the pass.
Is It Worth It?
The Roma Pass earns its keep if you'll visit several paid sites and lean on public transport across two or three days — the Forum, Castel Sant'Angelo, Capitoline Museums and more. For a Colosseum-only trip it rarely beats a standard ticket, and the extra reservation step adds friction. If your main goal is the arena floor or the underground, those need a specific ticket or guided tour anyway, which the pass does not replace.
